A virtual assistant is someone who works from home or an outside office, and gives administrative support in a variety of ways to a business or entrepreneur. Businesses use this support for occasional help or for large projects in a variety of ways. 

The purpose of a VA is to give business people more leverage with their time, which can be better spent actually running their business.
